Iranian airlines continued operating international flights on Wednesday, despite a US deadline to ground the country's carriers through sanctions targeting companies that provide services to them.
Flightradar24 showed several flights departing Iran for destinations including Bangkok and Phuket in Thailand, Shanghai, and Kabul, Afghanistan, hours after the new US restrictions took effect.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that all Iranian airlines would be "shut down" on September 23, threatening secondary sanctions and removal from the US dollar system for foreign airports, fuel suppliers, and ticketing companies that continue servicing Iranian carriers.
