Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar (pictured) said on Sunday that the country hopes to start operating its first nuclear power plant before the end of the year.
"We are currently in the testing phase of the first reactor. We want to complete the tests step by step and commission the first reactor by the end of 2026. Our goal is to produce electricity by the end of 2026," Bayraktar told the Sabah newspaper. "Work continues on the other reactors as well. We have a plan to establish a data center along with the third and fourth reactors. We are working on this," he added.
After Turkey signed a deal with Russia's Rosatom in 2010, the construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant began in 2017, with the goal of the plant producing 10% of the country's electricity once fully operational. Bayraktar added that Russia has shown interest in participating in more nuclear projects in Turkey.
