The International Energy Agency (IEA) agreed on Thursday to accelerate the release of the remaining 100 million barrels of emergency oil stocks, aiming to ease "continued tightness in oil markets, notably for diesel."
According to the agency, about 330 million barrels have already been released under the collective action launched in March 2026 in response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. The IEA said members would complete the remaining releases in a timely manner, with plans to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel "as soon as possible."
Some members have already released more oil than initially pledged, while others intend to increase their contributions, potentially pushing total releases above the original 400 million-barrel target. The IEA also "encouraged those IEA Members holding oil production and refining capacities to boost supply of crude and refined products, particularly diesel," and "underlined the importance of the free flow of energy trade."
