Google LLC announced in a blog post on Thursday that it opened up a "key bottleneck" in quantum computing, showing how its "magic state cultivation" works in practice on the Willow processor, "reducing errors about 40x compared to without it." The tech conglomerate noted that this is a "crucial step towards scaling up quantum computing to practical use."
The magic state bottleneck was discovered all the way back in 2004. In order to have universal quantum computing, non-Clifford operations, such as the T gate, must be injected. As this action cannot be done without breaking error protection, pre-prepared magic states are being used. However, these magic states come with a lot of physical errors and need to be cleaned up with a distillation process, which takes up to 95% of a quantum computer's entire physical capacity, leaving almost no room for actual computing.
Now, Google's cultivation protocol is helping solve this issue. "On Google Quantum AI's Willow processor, our protocol achieved an extraordinary 40-fold reduction in errors relative to uncultivated states. And we got T-states with a record logical fidelity of 99.99%," Google explained.
