Anthropic said to pitch AI safety bill to US Congress

Representatives of Anthropic PBC have submitted a draft to United States lawmakers outlining the company's proposal for a bill that would regulate the safety and security of artificial intelligence (AI), Politico reported, citing the draft document it obtained and an Anthropic spokesperson.

The proposed bill would allow the US government to block the release of an AI model only if it deemed it posed an imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages, or of killing or seriously injuring over 50 people by creating a biological weapon, evading developers' control, or conducting a cyberattack. "This bill represents the proposals outlined in Anthropic's Advanced AI Framework, which we have been advocating for with federal and state lawmakers since June," the spokesperson told the outlet and added that the AI giant believes "Congress should act"on these "sensible policies."

Earlier this year, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for AI "guardrails" and a slowdown in its development following several security incidents.
