Tehran should welcome US Vice President JD Vance's proposal for renewed negotiations, arguing it offers a chance to end the conflict between Iran and the United States, former Iranian nuclear negotiator Hossein Mousavian said Friday.
In a post on X, Mousavian said Vance had opposed the war from the beginning and had worked extensively on the Islamabad memorandum of understanding. He argued that negotiations between Tehran and Washington had reached a critical stage.
Based on his interpretation of US media reports, Mousavian said Vance's letter to Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei focused on four points: immediate direct talks between senior officials, prioritizing both countries' national interests, recognizing Iran's economic reconstruction and sovereignty as its central interests, and ensuring Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons as Washington's main objective.
Mousavian said the strongest candidates for renewed negotiations were Vance on the American side and either Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf or Rezaei on the Iranian side. He urged both countries to hold their first meeting before the November 3 US midterm elections.
