Following the suspected arson at a construction site belonging to defense contractor Rheinmetall at Kassel-Calden Airport, police are examining a "confession letter" published online. The letter, posted on a platform classified as left-wing extremist by the domestic intelligence agency, will be "thoroughly examined as part of the ongoing investigation," the North Hesse police headquarters said.
Investigators assume the fire was deliberately set and continue to seek witnesses who observed anything suspicious at the time of the incident. The investigation is being conducted by the State Security Criminal Investigation Department of the North Hesse police headquarters.
Three construction vehicles caught fire at the site overnight Thursday. A witness alerted the fire department and police at around 3:15 a.m. The fire department extinguished the vehicles. Other machines parked nearby were damaged, according to police.
According to investigators, the site is the planned location of a logistics and training center as well as a drone testing center at Kassel Airport. Rheinmetall and the state of Hesse announced investments of more than €260m at the site in August.
