Anthropic is said to be in talks to lease a hyperscale data center from Beacon Data Centers Inc., located northeast of Edmonton, sources told The Globe and Mail on Friday.
The site, which is located in Sturgeon County in Alberta, will feature four data halls intended to contain artificial intelligence and high-performance computing facilities. The Alberta Utilities Commission had previously approved a 920-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant to supply the data center, with construction expected to begin by year-end. However, the regulator's decision extends only to the power facility and does not include the approval of data center projects.
Earlier this month, Edmonton citizens protested against the government's permissive approach to building AI data centers in the area, largely concerning the province's decision to award a water license of 24 million cubic meters for Wonder Valley AI Data Centre Park without consulting indigenous communities.
