New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill stated that she is considering blocking a shipment of Russian diesel from arriving at a port in the state, KYW Newsradio reported on October 29.
The Trump administration announced a deal with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, for Russia to supply hundreds of thousands of tonnes of diesel to US and global markets. UNITED24 Media reported that the arrangement included an initial shipment of more than 300,000 tonnes, with larger deliveries expected to follow.
In a statement to KYW Newsradio, Sherrill commented on US President Donald Trump’s fuel agreement with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, arguing that it has failed to reduce energy costs for American consumers.
“Donald Trump isn’t doing anything to bring down gas prices, diesel prices, or costs,” Sherrill stated. “Instead, he is lining Vladimir Putin’s pockets at the expense of American consumers and our democratic ally Ukraine.”
The diesel volumes involved are unlikely to materially lower US fuel prices. UNITED24 Media calculated that the initial 300,000-tonne shipment would cover less than two hours of global diesel demand, while analysts described the expected effect on prices as marginal.
Sherrill stated that her administration is examining possible steps to prevent the shipment from entering New Jersey.
“Make no mistake: Trump’s diesel deal with Putin is corrupt and illegal, and I am evaluating options to stop it from arriving at a port in New Jersey,” she told KYW Newsradio.
The shipment is also facing pressure from Congress. US Senator Richard Blumenthal urged the Agioi Fanendes, a Malta-flagged tanker carrying around 40,000 tonnes of Russian diesel toward New York and New Jersey, to turn around, arguing that a presidential license cannot override the 2022 federal ban on Russian energy imports.
