Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Friday that his country will contribute €500 million toward the European Union's planned €90 billion loan to Ukraine.
"With respect to the Ukraine loan ... €500 million will be our initial participation. This is a very important and effective mechanism, and I actually commend the innovation of [European Commission] President [Ursula] von der Leyen, the Commission, and [European Council] President [Antonio] Costa in creating this, using frozen assets to provide the much-needed financing for Ukraine," Carney said during a joint press conference with Von der Leyen and Costa.
The Canadian prime minister noted that his country's contribution is an example of the implementation of Canada's recently announced association with the European Union, adding that it is a "positive alliance."
