Teflon Ilhan?

 by James Zumwalt

Years after Ilhan Omar seemingly committed fraud entering the U.S., she appears to have the political dexterity of John Gotti—better known as “Teflon Don.” As “Don” (head) of New York City’s Gambino family in 1985 after ordering the murder of its former boss, Gotti acquired the Teflon Don label as the U.S. government failed twice to convict him on various charges. Ultimately convicted in 1992 of numerous crimes, he died in prison.

Few people remember Gotti today, but Omar brings back his memory. Some people get away with crimes. Will Teflon Ilhan, now in her eighth year in Congress and with extensive investigations turning up damning evidence, fall?

Whether she is a citizen determines if she can be denaturalized or deported, or should even be a representative in Congress, and Omar’s naturalization could have been established in one of two ways:

Her father, Nur Omar Mohamed, with family in tow, fled Somalia due to the civil war. They eventually made their way to the U.S., and on his citizenship application, Mohamed failed to reveal he was a former warlord who assisted the country’s dictator, Siad Barre, and the brutal one-party Marxist-Leninist government he established, to hold power for 22 years.

The application included his children, but what is critical is the year given for daughter Omar’s birth. Her inclusion as a child would be valid (under 18), but as an adult would not. Mohamed wrote “1981” which made her an adult. Omar quietly had her staff “correct” her birth year for the record as “1982” after taking office.

The availability of birth certificate documentation from Somalia is probably more rare than a unicorn, thus contributing to a delay in prosecuting her. Whether evidence has now been collected proving her real age is uncertain, but discussions with Omar’s sister and/or the October 12 raid of Omar’s home may have produced something.

A new revelation may make evidence about Omar’s birthdate irrelevant. She has always claimed her naturalization occurred as a child under her father’s citizenship application. But a “diligent search” by a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services information officer found absolutely “no record” of any evidence her father was even naturalized.

Thus, Omar’s age may be immaterial as the father was never a citizen—disallowing her from claiming citizenship if she was a child at the time. This also means Omar is illegally serving in Congress. But that is not all.

According to several sources, evidence also exists that “Ilhan Omar” may not even be her real name. It may be Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. (Interestingly, in Somalia, a child’s first name is followed by the father’s name which, in her case, is “Nur.”)

Utilizing a fake name would bring every document she has ever signed into question. A motion has been filed in court using her real name—“Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi”—although her office claims this is false. A former federal immigration judge reports, if someone has lived their life under an alias, criminal charges may well mount up.

Also gaining investigators’ attention is a 2024 claim by the government of Somaliland that Omar leaked congressional information to Somalia. While Somaliland is not a country, it is a recognized sovereign state that has declared independence from Somalia. (Omar once sat on the House Foreign Affairs committee, and even now has been pressing Somalian leaders to act against Somaliland as she discourages stronger U.S.-Somaliland ties.)

Other allegations against Omar (or whatever her real name is) claim she married her brother in 2009 to illegally facilitate his U.S. entry. Her marriage that year was to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, divorcing him in 2017, as she had not seen him for six years. She was elected to Congress the following year.

Apparently having an active love life, in 2020 she married her third husband—Tim Mynett—himself married at the time they reportedly got together. Asked recently if Elmi, who now claims to be gay, is related to her, Omar responded, “not to my knowledge”—a strange response for an allegation she describes as “insane.” During the raid on her home, searchers went through her trash, possibly looking for DNA evidence to prove/disprove the allegation.

There are also numerous financial questions concerning the activities of Omar and her current husband.

While a 2024 financial disclosure filing reported a net worth between 40,000-250,000 for Omar, by May 2025, it had blossomed to between 6-30 million. But in March 2026, she amended that disclosure to show assets of between 18,004-95,000. Millions of dollars had inexplicably vanished. Additional financial questions remain, specifically around Mynett’s wine business—the company “shuttered due to fraud,” according to Rep. James Comer.

Omar’s involvement in the Somali community’s fraud, by which it collected millions of dollars from government programs ostensibly designed to feed and care for children during the pandemic, and her involvement in her sister’s financial gain, all raise questions in need of answers too.

Meanwhile, Omar ludicrously claims she is part of the “working class,” despite making a $174,000 annual salary—more than twice the average American’s income.

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz says about the Omar case, “I think she’s in much, much deeper trouble than she is willing to admit.”

If any or all of the above allegations are true, it reveals the Somali immigrant’s absolute lack of gratitude for a country that took her and her family in when her home country sought to hold her father accountable for his genocidal actions.

Meanwhile, Omar claims Trump’s actions are purely political, aimed at silencing her and, unbelievably, because of her natural beauty. Yet she ignores the investigation against her was initiated during the Joe Biden administration and that a Biden-appointed judge has approved the warrants against her.

There is both good news and bad for Omar. The good—if there was no naturalization of her father, she cannot be denaturalized; the bad—she can be repatriated. Her bad news, however, would be great for America.
