Amazon Web Services Chief Financial Officer (CFO) John Felton told Axios that the company's artificial intelligence (AI) expenditures are paying off.
Felton stressed that AI should be seen as a productivity booster more than a cost-saving tool, describing the technology as "an amazing muck reduction tool" that allows professionals to "reinvest their time into more value-added activities." He added that AWS is "seeing paybacks of under three years" on AI server spending and noted he was "surprised" by the "anti-data center movement" as he saw them as "investing in local communities" to create jobs.
Furthermore, Felton stated that AWS' capex is based on a nearly $500 billion order backlog, with customers including "large enterprises, large AI labs, but also small and medium-sized businesses."
