United States bipartisan lawmakers introduced a bill on Friday aimed at blocking President Donald Trump's "corrupt deal" with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the import of Russian diesel.
"This deal won't lower costs for the American people, who are already paying for Trump's failed war of choice in Iran. It will hand Putin millions of dollars to continue slaughtering Ukrainian civilians with impunity," said House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks, who sponsored the bill. "At a time when the United States should be increasing pressure on the Kremlin, Donald Trump is cozying up to Putin and striking self-enriching deals instead of standing with Ukraine," Meeks added.
The bill seeks to bar the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) from investing in Russia's energy sector, revoke general licenses issued by the Treasury Department and prohibit future ones, and mandate that the Trump administration impose sanctions on Russian energy.
