The United States Department of State will update its travel advisory for mainland China, warning travelers of a higher risk of "wrongful detention," Semafor reported on Friday, citing a policy plan reviewed by the outlet.
The policy shift follows the continued detention of two US citizens, Min Zin and Youlin Chen. Zin, a Myanmar scholar, was detained in June on allegations of posing a threat to China's national security, while Chen, a seismologist, was detained in 2024 on suspicion of espionage, a source told Semafor.
