Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Thursday that the war in Iran has cost European Union member states more than €100 billion, warning that rising energy prices are hurting households and "undermining" the competitiveness of European businesses.
Speaking on arrival at the European Council in Brussels, Sanchez linked the continent's cost-of-living pressures to the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran, which he described as "illegal and unjustified" wars that have violated international law.
He compared the financial toll of the Iran war to the EU's annual spending on agriculture. Sanchez said EU leaders would address a broad agenda at today's meeting, including ongoing conflicts, energy prices, migration and renewable energy.
