United States First Lady Melania Trump managed to secure a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, localized to the city of Oleshky in the southern part of the Kherson region, the White House announced on Friday.
Under the agreement, both Russia and Ukraine will halt all military action in the city to allow for humanitarian aid to enter and prepare a civilian evacuation through a "designated safe passageway." The ceasefire will go into effect on October 29.
"The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks. It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible," the first lady stated, adding that some of the residents will be given support and transportation to their preferred destination in Russia or Ukraine.
First Lady Melania Trump also noted that "impartial" US media will accompany and document Russian and Ukrainian teams on the ground throughout the process to ensure that wishes of all families are "faithfully respected."
