The United States could launch a new military strike on Iran as early as this weekend, US Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said Friday, while emphasizing that President Donald Trump remained open to a diplomatic agreement with Tehran.
“Could there be a strike this weekend? Absolutely,” Barrack, who also serves as US special envoy to Syria and Iraq, said in an interview with online commentator Mario Nawfal.
He said renewed US military action would not seek to overthrow the Islamic Republic, arguing that Trump was interested in reducing threats rather than pursuing a regime change.
“The United States, the president of the United States has said he’s not interested in regime change. He’s interested in rebalancing so that there’s no hostages, there’s no threats, and the world can calm down and ensure what’s there. The problem with regime change always is what’s the day two scenario?”
