OpenAI stated on Wednesday that the severity of the PHP security flaws makes them "one of the most impactful" vulnerabilities in recent memory.
The company said that it used its GPT-5.6 Sol model to help identify the vulnerabilities, then coordinated with PHP developers, cybersecurity firm Wiz, and government agencies to prepare protective measures before publicly disclosing the flaws. "It highlights how AI can uncover security flaws with internet-scale impact, but the same capabilities can also help attackers rapidly develop offensive tools and exploits," the company stated. According to the ChatGPT maker, frontier artificial intelligence was able to detect the vulnerabilities in the open-source programming language before hackers did.
The developers of PHP, whose technology powers up to 70% of websites worldwide, disclosed a critical security flaw that could allow hackers to take control of systems running the software, calling on all its users to update "immediately."
