US judge orders Meta to pay $25B for misconduct

United States First Judicial District of New Mexico Judge Francis Mathew ordered Meta Platforms Inc. to pay $25 billion over the Cambridge Analytica privacy case, a court filing showed on Wednesday.

Earlier in September, a jury found the tech firm liable for misleading users about its privacy protections, citing over 43 million violations of state consumer protection law. At the time, the New Mexico Department of Justice praised the verdict, calling it a "significant victory."

New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez described the verdict as "one of the largest, if not the single largest state verdict against a company in American history," adding that it should serve as a lesson to Silicon Valley.
