German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in a speech at the Bundestag on Wednesday that Germany must strengthen its defenses, insisting that currently it is not capable of defending itself. He said that his government's priorities are ensuring the country's "freedom, peace, prosperity, and welfare state in these difficult times."
Answering a question on high energy prices, Merz said the government could impose measures to counter them, including a higher commuter allowance, but stressed that "the best way to bring prices back under control is to end the war in Iran." He added that it has not ruled out an increase in value-added tax (VAT), although it is also considering lowering the VAT for food.
