British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the military will be allowed to board Russian shadow fleet vessels transiting through UK waters, in a bid to amp up the pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Putin is rubbing his hands at the war in the Middle East because he thinks higher oil prices will let him line his pockets," Starmer said ahead of the Joint Expeditionary Force Summit in Helsinki, where he is due to make an appearance on Thursday. UK armed forces and law enforcement officers have been preparing to board sanctioned Russian vessels that "don't surrender, are armed, or use high tech pervasive surveillance to evade capture," the press release noted.
After the ships are boarded, "criminal proceedings may be brought against the against the owners, operators and crew for breaches of UK sanctions legislation."
