Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf will not attend a BRICS parliamentary meeting in New Delhi due to “unforeseen circumstances,” Iran’s embassy in India said on Saturday.
The embassy gave no further explanation. The announcement coincided with media reports about the possibility of renewed US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
Ghalibaf has served as Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the United States in recent months, outlining Tehran’s positions on the war, ceasefire and conditions for negotiations.
An Iranian parliamentary delegation will still attend the BRICS Parliamentary Forum scheduled for October 26–27 in the Indian capital, the embassy said.
