Spain has linked Iran to the 2023 attempted assassination of Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a former European Parliament vice president and prominent supporter of Iranian opposition groups, El PaĆs reported.
In a filing reported Friday, Spanish prosecutors sought prison sentences of up to 27 years for seven defendants accused of involvement in the shooting in Madrid on November 9, 2023, when Vidal-Quadras was shot in the face but survived.
The prosecution said the attack was part of a broader pattern of covert Iranian operations targeting dissidents and critics abroad.
Vidal-Quadras, a former leader of Spain's conservative People's Party, had supported the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran. The alleged coordinator of the attack, Sami Bekal Bounouare, remains at large and is believed to have fled to Iran, according to the report.
