'Protests spark kin Turkey over journalists' arrests'

Thousands of people gathered on Saturday in Turkey's capital Ankara and Istanbul to protest against the detention of journalists and the shutdown of media outlets.

According to the Turkish Journalists' Union, 11 journalists have been arrested in the last two months and several media outlets have been shut down. Earlier this month, police raided Halk TV, Turkey's most-watched news channel and critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, interrupted its broadcasts, and installed a government-appointed administrator.

Protesters in Turkey's two major cities, mainly journalists, opposition party representatives, and rights groups, shouted that they "can no longer breathe" and that they "will not be silenced."
