US urges 'maximum restraint' from Ethiopia, Eritrea

 The United States Department of State called on Ethiopia and Eritrea to "exercise maximum restraint" amid recent clashes and increasing tensions between the African countries.

"Increasing cross-border tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have the potential to affect the entire region," US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated. "A conflict jeopardizes ongoing US collaboration on shared interests with both countries," he added and warned that the Horn of Africa "cannot sustain another military conflict and humanitarian crisis."

Earlier in the week, Ethiopia said it would close its embassy in Eritrea and declared 10 Eritrean diplomats in Addis Ababa personae non gratae, citing Eritrean "direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence" towards Ethiopia.
