Circus at Luigi Mangione’s court hearing — where supporters want to be heard, but not seen

By

The Luigi Mangione fangirls started lining up Thursday night to secure a spot in the courtroom and see the deranged alleged murderer plead “not guilty” in person Friday.

Not that many of the 20 or so supporters would speak to the press.

Most wore Covid masks, along with hoods and shades — anything to obscure their identities. A pair of young women, looking like radical-chic versions of Jackie O, donned printed silk scarves over their heads and oversized sunglasses.

One gal whined that she didn’t want her employer to see her in any photos.

When trying to engage with these people, I was met with death stares. The lone man in the gaggle told me to “move on.”

They want to be counted, but not identified. That’s conviction for you.

John McIntosh, who was fifth in line to get into the courthouse at 40 Centre Street, spent the night outside — hoping to sell his prime spot to a desperate Luigi fan for $350. No takers. “I should have dropped the price to $50,” he said.

Chelsea Manning, who served time for giving classified US military documents to WikiLeaks, was on hand, wearing a pinstriped suit and tie and waiting patiently. Manning, who also showed up at a previous Mangione hearing, declined to give an interview and would only say, “I’m here as a citizen … I’m here to observe court proceedings.”

Then a protest, organized by the activist group People over Profit, broke out in opposition to prosecutors filing a notice Thursday night about seeking the death penalty in the case.

A woman dressed like Luigi from “Super Mario Brothers” paraded around smiling — until any journalist asked a question. “No interviews!” she barked.

Nadine Seiler came from Maryland to hold a banner spray painted with the message “Luigi before Fascists.” Yoel Friedman, an Orthodox Jewish man from Monroe, New York, wore a sign across his back that read “Deny Delay Depose” and advertised his website.

“I support Luigi…He did the right thing. He opened the eyes of the people to talk about this,” Friedman said, meaning health insurance. When asked if the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson was justified, he said “Yes.”

Chilling words, even on a sunny spring day.

Thompson was not only murdered in cold blood but, in death, the father of two is being vilified over and over like he was healthcare’s Hitler, systematically and intentionally killing people from his corner office.

“These are good people, smart people,” said artist Jarva Land, who showed up to sketch Mangione’s fans — and, hopefully, his eyebrows — in court. “These are people you want participating in democracy and justice in our country. They’re not crazy fangirls, and maybe they’re going to change the world.”

I believe they already have, by endorsing the execution of the powerful. Where does the justification stop?

Last Friday, a handful of fans also showed up at the courthouse even though Mangione’s appearance had been canceled. One, a New Hampshire resident who called herself Chaos V, put on an impromptu concert to perform her original song, “Delulu for Lu Lu.”

“I hope he’s locked up with me,” she sang. “And they throw away the key.”

It was written, she told me, while she laid in a hospital bed with an unspecified stomach issue. She believes women aren’t treated well by the medical industry.

“Murder is not just, obviously, but I really can’t feel that bad when you are killing that many people,” she said. She denied Mangione’s looks inspired her techno masterpiece, but her friend interjected to add that other fans “think he’s hot. Just saying.”

The accused’s looks are a sensitive subject all around. I was approached by a 26-year-old California native, who was eager to speak but not on the record. She was disheartened by the media calling Mangione supporters love-struck ladies.

“I’m a lesbian,” she said. “I don’t care about his looks.”

It’s his actions that have sparked an overdue conversation, she added.

She asked if I felt that peaceful protest was the answer, and I said yes. Then she hit me with it: “I’ve been a climate activist since I was 15, and nothing has changed.”

That’s the thing. A large portion of young Americans — through schools, social media and the celebrities they follow — have been fed a steady diet of injustice porn. And sold activism as salvation.

They saw a young Greta Thunberg exalted. They were promised urgent results if only they spoke up and organized.

While this girl was polite, curious and even sweet, I found her words as disturbing as Mr. Friedman’s.

Yes, there are real issues in the healthcare system that need to be addressed.

But this is a dangerous mindset, to believe that, when people cannot be swayed with reason, pivoting to violence is not only justified — it’s righteous. To believe that the powers that be will bend at the threat of bloodshed.

That’s not democracy, that’s terrorism.

In reversal, US Justice Department says media records can be seized in leak probes

The U.S. Justice Department under President Donald Trump made it easier for prosecutors investigating leaks to the news media to subpoena records and testimony from journalists, according to a memo seen by Reuters on Friday that reversed a Biden-era policy.

New regulations detailed in the Friday memo will allow prosecutors in criminal investigations to use subpoenas, court orders and search warrants to compel "production of information and testimony by and relating to members of the news media," the memo stated.

“Safeguarding classified, privileged and other sensitive information is essential to effective governance and law enforcement,” Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote in the memo.

A source familiar with the matter said the policy took effect immediately.

The Justice Department and White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The directive reverses a policy the department implemented during Democratic President Joe Biden's administration. That barred prosecutors from seizing reporters’ phone and email records in most circumstances.

The Biden administration's policy followed criticism of the Justice Department for secretly subpoenaing records on reporters and congressional staff members as prosecutors pursued leaks of national security information during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021.

The department’s former policy, implemented under Attorney General Merrick Garland, barred the Justice Department from compelling records from reporters, unless the journalist was a suspect in a criminal investigation unrelated to newsgathering or they had obtained information through criminal methods.

Bondi said the Justice Department will employ “procedural protections” before demanding information from reporters, including giving advance notice to the journalists and requiring leadership approval in some situations, according to the memo.

She said subpoenas and search warrants related to journalists would be narrowly targeted and she would consider whether the information could be obtained another way.

“These procedural protections recognize that investigative techniques relating to newsgathering are an extraordinary measure to be deployed as a last resort when essential to a successful investigation or prosecution,” Bondi wrote in the memo.

"The Attorney General must also approve efforts to question or arrest members of the news media," the memo said.

The new policy was first reported by ABC. The Trump administration has taken an assertive approach in dealing with the news media, including restricting the Associated Press's access to the White House over its decision to refer to the Gulf of Mexico and taking control of the White House pool, a function previously performed by the White House Correspondents' Association.

"Some of the most consequential reporting in U.S. history — from Watergate to warrantless wiretapping after 9/11 — was and continues to be made possible because reporters have been able to protect the identities of confidential sources and uncover and report stories that matter to people across the political spectrum," said Bruce Brown, president of the Reporters Committee, an advocacy group for journalists, in a statement.

"Strong protections for journalists serve the American public by safeguarding the free flow of information."

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said last month that the department would investigate a leak of what he called classified intelligence information about a Venezuelan gang.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth this week warned of possible criminal prosecutions of former senior advisers who were fired following leak probes.

The jig is up! Newsom busted for blowing state Medicaid dollars on homeless housing

While media pundits and other high-profile Democrats have relentlessly fearmongered about President Trump’s plans to “gut” entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicaid, it turns out Gavin Newsom was quietly doing exactly that.

From Kristen Hwang at CalMatters just yesterday:

In 2022, California made sweeping changes to its Medi-Cal program that reimagined what health care could look like for some of the state’s poorest and sickest residents by covering services from housing to healthy food. But the future of that program, known as CalAIM, could be at risk under the Trump administration.

In recent weeks, federal officials have signaled that support for creative uses of Medi-Cal funding is waning, particularly uses that California has invested in such as rent assistance and medically tailored meals. Medi-Cal is California’s name for Medicaid.

“Medically tailored meals” in layman’s terms is: healthy food.

According to Hwang, beginning in 2022 the Biden administration began to offer federal waivers that would “allow states to experiment with their Medicaid programs to try to save money and improve health outcomes” and hence, CalAIM was born. So naturally, Newsome took the opportunity to implement socialist ideas that have failed since their inception, and obliterated the state’s finances. For context, CBS News reported less than two weeks ago that there is currently a “$6.2 billion hole in the state’s Medicaid budget.” For more context, those are the losses after just one year.

So Newsom’s actually been “gutting” and stealing from Medi-Cal enrollees to pay for more food stamps and housing the bums, giving the public the illusion of less homelessness—which has been a major complaint from the voters—while the media accuses Trump of being the threat to entitlement programs. Got it; sounds about right.

Like I noted in a blog yesterday, “only the government” is a condemning observation—and it’s at-play again. Only a government, running a state that happens to be the world’s fourth largest economy, only being beaten by the United States as a whole, China, and Germany, with a GDP of more than $4.1 trillion, could be on the brink of insolvency.

If you’re one of those people who hasn’t yet figured out the problem, allow me to explain, à la James Carville: it’s the policies, stupid!

The big surprise about that judge arrested for allegedly helping an illegal alien escape from ICE

It’s big news: Judge Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee County circuit judge, was arrested today because she allegedly assisted an illegal alien in escaping when ICE agents showed up at the courthouse to arrest him. If you’re like me, you’re not surprised that a leftist judge broke the law. Instead, you’re extremely surprised that the federal government is making her pay the price for her illegal conduct.

The underlying allegations are simple:

In a criminal complaint, the U.S. Justice Department said Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee County circuit judge, refused to turn over the man after immigration agents showed up to arrest him in her courtroom on April 18, and that she tried to help him evade arrest by allowing him to exit through a jury door.

(You can read all the allegations here.)

According to Pam Bondi, Dugan acted with overwrought intent:

Just as the allegations are simple, so is the law. Per 8 U.S.C. § 1324:

(a) Criminal penalties

(1)(A) Any person who—

(iii) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation;

shall be punished as provided in subparagraph (B).

According to subparagraph (B), the consequences are steep: Since Dugan presumably acted not for financial gain, which could mean up to 10 years in prison, but for other reasons (e.g., fighting imaginary “Nazis”), she faces fines or up to five years in prison, or both.

Dugan has now joined Judge Jose “Joel” Cano, the recently resigned New Mexico judge, and his wife, Nancy, who were arrested for allegedly knowingly harboring in their home an illegal alien who is a Tren de Aragua member.

Because I am accustomed to morally corrupt leftist judges, having practiced law in the San Francisco Bay Area for 30 years, it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that these judges, assuming the allegations are true, blatantly violated federal law. After all, as we’ve seen for years now, leftist judges will not apply the law to favored defendants, whether because the defendants belong to a Democrat protected class (race, sexual identity, etc.) or because the judges disagree with the law.

Given that fact, why would they balk when it came to their own conduct and laws with which they disagree?  So, no surprise there.

I’m also unsurprised at the way the news is being greeted on the left, which is that it’s just so wrong that she was arrested. After all, for leftists, there is no difference between people who are innocents rounded up strictly based on their race, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, rounding up people who arrived in this country illegally and committed heinous crimes, such as murder, rape, and drug and sex trafficking. There’s also no difference in their minds between the innocents being slaughtered en masse and people here illegally being returned to their own countries or, if criminals, sent to a prison:

Then there’s Milwaukee’s mayor, Cavalier Johnson, complaining that it’s just so wrong for the Trump administration to scare innocent illegal aliens—with the implication that the judge acted righteously:Milwaukee’s County Executive had exactly the same line—how dare the Trump administration scare these nice illegal aliens?

So, no, none of the above surprises me. What surprises me is that, faced with judges who allegedly openly violated very clear laws, the Trump administration actually arrested them.

I’ve been worried that Pam Bondi and Kash Patel might have been all hat and no cattle, but perhaps they were just getting their ducks in a row, cleaning the rot out of their agencies, finding people they can trust, and making sure to pick cases that are so blatant that, even if rogue judges or juries pervert the outcome, the public will know what’s going on.
