Iranian oil slips into discount amid weak Chinese demand and US blockade

Iranian oil prices have fallen into discount for the first time since April, as weak demand from Chinese refiners outweighs tighter supply caused by a sharp drop in exports under the US blockade, Reuters reported on Friday.

Iranian Light crude is being offered at a discount of 50 cents to $1 per barrel against ICE Brent for delivery this month to China’s eastern Shandong province, three traders told Reuters. The grade had traded at premiums of $1 to $2 in the previous two months.

Shandong is home to China’s independent refiners, known as teapots, which are among the main buyers of sanctioned Iranian oil. But weak fuel demand and poor refining margins have forced some of them to cut processing rates.

“Buyers aren’t accelerating procurement even if supply is tight, because prices are still too high for teapots who are suffering great losses,” said Xu Muyu, senior crude oil analyst at Kpler. “Also teapots are lowering run rates, so demand is also coming down.”

Putin questions Zelensky letter, sees 'no point' in meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that he saw "no point" in meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky only because of his open letter, responding to a question from the panel moderator at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Asked whether he would meet the author of the letter, Putin said, "I see no point," arguing that any meeting should come after experts work toward long-term arrangements, and said both sides first "need to arrive at the solution."

He also said he had only briefly reviewed the letter, which Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov showed him the previous day. He said age was "not the most important thing" for a political leader and questioned Ukraine's stance on US President Donald Trump's administration as a possible peace guarantor.

'WSJ: Trump orders Pulte to start mass firings at intel agencies'

United States President Donald Trump instructed the new acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI), Bill Pulte (pictured), to start mass firings at the country's intelligence community, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

In an interview with the media outlet that was released earlier today, Trump disclosed that he told Pulte that the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which supervises 18 federal intelligence agencies and units, is "unnecessary and too big."

"Frankly, it might be good for him [Pulte] to shake it up before people come. Because, if he reduced the size, in conjunction with me … and in conjunction with possibly the person coming in … he can do a lot of the hard work, and we wouldn't have to saddle somebody that goes in," Trump argued, emphasizing that the new acting director is "less shackled."

'Khamenei aide says $24B in frozen funds blocking talks'

Peace negotiations between the United States and Iran are currently at an impasse due to the $24 billion in Tehran's frozen assets, Mohsen Rezaei, military adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei told CNN in an interview on Friday.

"The negotiations are at a deadlock and [US President Donald] Trump must break this deadlock," Rezaei said. "If he wants to reach an agreement with Iran, this $24 billion is a test of trust that Iran wants to have with Trump - this is a test that America must pass and the path will be opened," he added.

In addition, the official claimed that the meeting between Khamenei and Trump "will not happen," and warned that Iran will "drag the war" beyond the Persian Gulf if the US decides to return to the conflict.
