Iran official warns Starlink could end state control of internet

The spread of Starlink could deliver the “final nail in the coffin” of Iran’s ability to control cyberspace, Deputy Communications Minister Mohammad Hafez Hakami said Wednesday, warning that future crises may leave authorities unable to shut down communications as before.

Hakami said officials had been warning about Starlink for two years without producing a policy response. He said the government’s response to unrest has grown progressively more restrictive, from blocking a single platform in 2017 to shutting down internet access during the 2019 protests, blocking two major platforms after the 2022 protests, and ultimately disconnecting the entire network during the 2026 unrest.

He said that approach was becoming less effective because Starlink operates outside Iran’s domestic network. “In the next crisis, we may be forced to cut electricity to the internet.”
