'Iran tells media to steer clear of Mecca defense pact in secret directive'

Iran's Supreme National Security Council instructed domestic media to avoid commentary either supporting or opposing the Mecca defense pact and to emphasize that the regional talks were proposed by Pakistan and accepted by Iran, according to a confidential directive obtained by Iran International on Monday.

“Western media are seeking to highlight the Mecca agreement,” the directive said. “Given the important role of domestic media, it is recommended that no analysis be offered on this subject, either for or against it.”

The directive, addressed to media executives and editors, laid out five guidelines for covering the visit by senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey.

Its two central instructions were to steer clear of analysis of the three countries' defense agreement and to present the four-way meeting as a Pakistani initiative conducted with Iran's approval.

The council also encouraged outlets to emphasize that the recent war had demonstrated the need for regional countries to cooperate on security and to portray the meeting as a possible starting point for a regional security framework originating in Tehran.

Other suggested topics included the consequences of US and Israeli military attacks on Iran, continued military operations and assistance to Palestinians and Lebanese.

The directive was circulated as senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey opened talks with Iranian authorities on Monday.

The Mecca defense pact, signed by the three countries in August, provides that a military attack on one member would be considered an attack on all three.
