'Iraq says some militias have disarmed, others agree to June 2027 deadline'

Al Arabiya reported that armed factions in Iraq, many of them backed by Iran, have agreed to bring their weapons under state control by June 30, 2027, citing a spokesman for the Iraqi prime minister.

The spokesman said Monday that all factions operate under state authority and would lay down their arms. He said several groups had already surrendered their weapons and their members had joined the Iraqi army.

“We will not be a party to the conflict in the region,” the spokesman said.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's government had initially set September 30 as the disarmament deadline before extending it by nine months following the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces from Iraq. Several Iran-backed factions had previously rejected the government's timetable.
