Amazon.com Inc.'s Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to launch its first Cloud Infrastructure Region in Saudi Arabia in December, AWS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Matt Garman announced on Monday during the LEAP technology event in Riyadh.
The term refers to a separate geographic zone in which AWS hosts multiple data centers. AWS has partnered with the artificial intelligence (AI) company HUMAIN, owned by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), to provide the kingdom with 50 megawatts (MW) of capacity for its so-called AI Zone by 2028. HUMAIN's Arabic-language large language model (LLM), ALLAM, will also soon be available on Amazon Bedrock.
"The launch of our new Region and our partnership with HUMAIN will deliver the full-stack cloud and AI infrastructure to help power new industries, create jobs, and accelerate the goals of [Saudi Arabia's national development program] Vision 2030," Garman said.
