United States Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent criticized Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday, saying relations between the two countries have become "political."
Bessent said that the US is not "in war with Canada," arguing that Carney "came to power on an anti-American, anti-Trump" rhetoric. He added that it is "unfortunate" the Canadian prime minister is "not doing better for the Canadian people." He also confirmed that he will meet his Canadian counterpart at the G20 summit.
US-Canada trade talks collapsed earlier this month, with both sides blaming the other for the breakdown. Washington subsequently imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods, while Ottawa announced retaliatory measures.
