'AI scientists warn about auto-developing models'

 Top scientists from several tech giants published a paper calling for oversight of automated AI research and development, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. The paper was signed by OpenAI Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki, Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark, Microsoft Chief Scientific Officer Eric Horvitz and Meta’s Vice President of AI Research Dawn Song, among others.

The paper argues that automated AI progress could lead to an "intelligence explosion," allowing AI models to achieve years of advances in "months or less." The scientists warned that this pace of development could "accelerate far beyond what society can keep up with, humans could lose control over AI and "checks on power within and between states, companies, and branches of government could be severely eroded." They urged policymakers to gain more insight into the automation process, limit the intelligence explosion and "prepare society to adapt to an intelligence explosion’s impacts."
