Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) began blocking Meta Platforms' (NASDAQ:META) newly launched Muse personal AI agent from making purchases on its store. Customers received a pop-up notification telling them Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed. Amazon shares were up 1.22% intraday.
Amazon said Meta never told it Muse would access the site and that the agent doesn't identify itself as one when it does. The retailer also claimed Muse can capture and store customer credentials, a security risk for its users. Meta said at Muse's launch that the assistant has "no visibility into people's passwords or payment methods." Meta hadn't responded to a request for comment.
In August, Amazon lost an appeal in its suit against Perplexity, overturning a court-ordered ban on that company's Comet browser doing much the same thing, and said it was evaluating next steps. Amazon has blocked agentic tools from ChatGPT and Google Gemini since 2025 and runs its own version, Buy for Me.
