Iraqi armed factions have agreed to begin handing over strategic weapons to the government in March 2027 under a new arrangement aimed at bringing weapons under state control, Al Arabiya reported on Monday, citing sources.
The factions have also pledged to halt any military activity outside the authority of the Iraqi state and will begin integrating their brigades into the Popular Mobilization Forces after the withdrawal of US troops is completed, the report said.
A committee overseeing efforts to restrict weapons to state control has reached understandings calling for the process to be completed by June 2027, according to Al Arabiya.
The report said unspecified parties were working to persuade Washington to accept the details of the new arrangement.
The development comes as the United States prepares to complete the withdrawal of its remaining troops from Iraq by September 30. Several powerful Iran-backed factions had previously resisted calls to disarm, while Baghdad has sought to bring armed groups and their heavier weapons under formal state command.
