Iran is pressuring Iraqi armed factions not to hand over their weapons as Baghdad pushes to bring arms under state control, Al Arabiya reported on Sunday, citing sources.
The sources said an Iraqi committee overseeing the disarmament process had received a document setting out demands from the factions concerning the handover of weapons, while the government had presented several proposals of its own.
The talks come ahead of a Sept. 30 deadline for ending the mission of the US-led international coalition in Iraq. Iraqi officials have said the date is final and that Baghdad intends to place security fully under central government control after the withdrawal.
Several powerful armed groups have either resisted disarmament or attached conditions to it, according to the report.
