Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev called on Saturday for European-owned assets in Russia to be permanently transferred into state ownership, arguing that Moscow should go beyond temporary administration.
"And yet, lo and behold, their companies are off-limits. Don't touch 'Nestle,' 'Auchan,' and the rest," Medvedev wrote on Telegram. He said Russia should revive early Soviet policies under which foreign factories were "forcibly and without compensation transferred to state ownership."
His remarks followed President Vladimir Putin's decision to place Nestle and Auchan's Russian assets under external management. Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said the companies came from "unfriendly countries." Medvedev also called for "direct military deterrence" in response to the new US sanctions law targeting Russia and Iran.
