Japan has more than 100,000 people over the age of 100

Japan's centenarian population just hit a new record, with the country having more than 107,000 people who are aged 100 or older. It's the first time the country known for its longevity has recorded more than 100,000 centenarians.

According to the latest data from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the Asian country has 107,677 people who are at least 100 years old as of Sept. 1. The statistic is nearly 8,000 more people than the previous year.

The total has risen for 56 consecutive years, according to the ministry. The ministry says Japan recorded 153 centenarians when the count began in 1963.

The Independent reported Tuesday that Japan has the highest national population of centenarians in the world.

Women made up the overwhelming majority of the country's centenarians, with the ministry announcing that 94,298 women and 13,379 men were aged 100 or older.

According to Scientific American, Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world and has become the first country to surpass 100,000 centenarians

Japan's Health Minister Kenichiro Ueno said he was very pleased that many people were remaining active for a long time, according to a ministry transcript of his Sept. 15 news conference.

Japan is known to have a longer life expectancy, with five more years on average than the U.S. In 2024, the World Bank data showed Japan's life expectancy at birth was 84 while the U.S. was 79.

The oldest people in Japan are Fuyo Kishimoto, a 114-year-old woman in Kyoto and Hikaru Kato, a 112-year-old man from Kumamoto, according to the ministry.

How many centenarians does the U.S. have?

U.S. Census Bureau population projections, cited by Pew Research Center, estimated that about 101,000 Americans would be 100 or older in 2024. The same projections put the total at about 422,000 by 2054.
