'Iran defense nominee pledges air-defense upgrades, military industry overhaul'

Iranian defense minister nominee Mehrdad Akhlaghi outlined 16 priorities for the ministry on Monday, including rebuilding industrial infrastructure, integrating emerging technologies into defense systems and strengthening air defenses.

“My proposed plan for running the Ministry of Defense sets out 16 priorities, one of which is redesigning and rebuilding the ministry for the future,” Akhlaghi said during a parliamentary session reviewing his plans for becoming defense minister, according to state media.

He said sanctions had not stopped defense production and support, and called for greater attention to the housing, healthcare and livelihoods of military personnel and retirees.
