US military working to develop coronavirus vaccine

The Pentagon is pitching in on work to develop a vaccine for the deadly coronavirus, the military’s top uniformed official said on Monday.
“Our military research labs are working feverishly around the horn here to try to come up with a vaccine. So we’ll see how that develops over the next couple of months,” Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley told reporters at the Pentagon.
It’s expected to take a year to 18 months to have a fully effective and accessible COVID-19 vaccine, according to top U.S. health officials.
Milley also said that U.S. government military laboratories are “working very consistently, not only on that vaccine but all kinds of things” and that the labs are “working in direct support with health and human services.”
Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who also spoke to reporters, said one of the labs was at Fort Detrick, an Army Medical Command installation in Frederick, Md.
As coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, the Defense Department has raced to limit the illness in the ranks. In the past week the department has canceled a joint military exercise with South Korea, restricted access to public areas at Army installations in Italy and ordered all ships that have visited countries in the Pacific region to remain at sea for 14 days.
In addition, U.S. Central Command has ordered all military personnel in Saudi Arabia to stop nonessential travel in the region.
CNN first reported Monday that the U.S. military also canceled a joint military exercise with Israel.
The precautions come as the virus has been recorded in at least 12 states, with two deaths in Washington state. A U.S. service member in South Korea as well and their spouse also tested positive for the illness.
Milley stressed that the virus’s overall impact on the military has been “very, very minimal.”
“That’s not to say it’s zero, but it’s very, very minimal,” he said. “That’s not surprising because we have a young demographic, healthy demographic, lots of immunizations, so on and so forth.”
He added that in addition to the canceled joint exercise with South Korea, defense officials are “taking a look at some other exercises to see if they need to be modified or changed” due to the threat of the illness.
“Here in the United States we are making all due preparations to protect our bases, camps and stations and also to act in support of Health and Human Services.”
In South Korea, where there have been more than 4,300 coronavirus cases recorded, the Pentagon has sent additional medical personnel, equipment and test kits.
Milley also said the Pentagon is planning for all outcomes in relation to the virus.
“The United States military looks at a wide variety of scenarios … pandemic is the worst case,” Milley said.
President Trump, meanwhile, said on Monday that he will be urging pharmaceutical executives to accelerate their efforts to develop a vaccine for the coronavirus. The executives are set to attend a meeting with members of the White House coronavirus task force later in the day.

Washington state confirms 4 more coronavirus deaths, for death toll of 6

Health officials on Monday confirmed four additional deaths from the coronavirus in Washington state, bringing the state’s total death toll to six.
There are 18 confirmed cases in Washington, including the six deaths.
Most of those who have died were elderly or had underlying health conditions.
“Unfortunately, we are starting to find more COVID-19 cases here in Washington that appear to be acquired locally,” said Dr. Kathy Lofy, a health officer for the Washington State Department of Health.
All of the cases are in King and Snohomish counties, but Lofy said the virus could be spreading in other areas of the state, too.

White House set to meet with senior airline, cruise industry officials

The White House will hold meetings this week with top executives from U.S. airlines and the cruise industry amid the growing coronavirus outbreak, a spokeswoman for Vice President Mike Pence confirmed Monday.

Pence, who is overseeing the administration’s efforts, will attend a meeting on Wednesday with airline officials Wednesday. Administration and airline officials said those planning to attend include the chief executives of American Airlines Group Inc , United Airlines Holdings Inc, Southwest Airlines Co, Spirit Airlines Inc and JetBlue Airways Corp.
Airline stocks have fallen sharply in recent weeks. American, which was down 3.6% on Monday, is off about 40% in the last two weeks. United, which fell 3.7% Monday, is down almost 30% since Feb. 13.
Pence’s office said he will meet on Saturday with cruise line chief executives in Florida. He will also meet with 3M Co executives in Minnesota, where 3M is based, on Thursday.
3M told CNBC last week it was ramping up production of its N95 respirator mask in the face of rising demand.
Shares in Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings are both down about 40% since January. Major cruise lines have been canceling cruises, especially in Asia, amid sagging demand. Asia accounts for about 10% of the worldwide cruise industry, and at one point the highest number of cases outside of China were aboard the Diamond Princess, a cruise ship docked in Japan.
U.S. airlines report travel demand has fallen sharply. Airlines have cut flights to Asia and Italy amid the crisis and canceled all flights to China until late April.
In response to falling demand, American Airlines said on Sunday it is waiving change fees for all tickets purchased through March 16 if changes are made within two weeks.

The FDA has approved Cerovene’s generic version of toxoplasmosis drug Daraprim (pyrimethamine).
Daraprim achieved notoriety in 2015 after Turing Pharmaceuticals, led by “Pharma Bro” Martin Shkreli, acquired the off-patent drug from Impax Labs for $55M then hiked the price 5,000%.
Mr. Shkreli is currently in prison (convicted in 2017) for securities fraud.
