Massive daycare fraud bust exposes alleged $10M scheme involving immigrants

A dozen individuals from Syria, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq and Somalia have all been arrested in connection to an alleged daycare fraud scam, accused of funneling more than $10 million in taxpayer-funded childcare subsidies to bogus providers.

More than 250 federal, state and local law enforcement officials descended early Thursday, arresting all 12 defendants and executing 12 search warrants at San Diego homes purportedly being used as daycare facilities.

“Completely bogus daycare facilities,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said.

Federal prosecutors allege the defendants obtained California licenses for home childcare facilities, registered with Child Development Associates and the YMCA, then submitted phony attendance records to collect government payments for children they allegedly never cared for.The paperwork was no small detail.

Providers were required to document the dates and times children were in their care and certify the records under penalty of perjury.

Investigators say surveillance footage told a very different story.

Abdulrahman Ayman Alawad allegedly claimed he provided childcare every day in March and April 2026, reporting 23 children in March and 25 in April.

But surveillance covering 57 days allegedly showed children entering or leaving his facility on just one day — the same day a state inspector arrived for an unannounced inspection.

According to a complaint against Turkiya Mamdouh Alawad, border records show she left the country around Jan. 1, 2024, and returned around Jan. 30.

Yet she allegedly submitted January attendance records and subsequently received eight CDA and YMCA deposits totaling $14,970.

The alleged profits were enormous.

Each defendant reportedly collected between $538,000 and $1.2 million over periods ranging from months to years.

Alawad allegedly received more than $300,000 in 2025 alone, while several defendants allegedly collected more than $1 million each.

“Shameless attempts to steal taxpayer-funded childcare funds for personal gain endanger support for some of our nation’s most vulnerable children,” Special Agent in Charge Robb R. Breeden said.

The 12 complaints are unrelated cases, but authorities allege essentially the same playbook — bogus attendance claims, government payments, and millions of dollars siphoned from programs meant to help low-income families pay for childcare.

All defendants, who range in age from 22 to 63, face wire fraud charges, carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine.

Iranian Nobel laureate says Mahsa Amini’s killing transformed society

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi said on Wednesday that Mahsa Jina Amini’s killing by the Islamic Republic inadvertently sparked one of the largest protest movements in Iran’s modern history and made “Woman, Life, Freedom” the shared language of a generation.

“Iranian society never returned to what it was before September 2022,” Ebadi said, adding that arrests, killings and other forms of state repression had failed to extinguish demands for freedom and equality or rebuild the “wall of fear.”

Ebadi said the January 2026 protests showed that neither public dissent nor the authorities’ bloodshed had subsided. She described the crackdown as the deadliest massacre in Iran’s contemporary history and said four years of organized repression had failed to force Iranian society into retreat.

'Germany's AfD National Support Hits Historic High; CDU Slumps To Record Low'

 Via Remix News,

A new poll in Germany has delivered yet another shocking blow to the political establishment. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has reached 30 percent for the first time while stretching its lead over the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) to 10 points, with the Union reaching a historic low of just 20 percent. In addition, another poll has also put the CDU even lower, at 18 percent.

According to the GMS poll, the governing black-red coalition of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's conservatives and the far-left SPD would no longer command a majority. Compared with GMS's mid-July survey, the Union lost three points and the AfD gained two.

"Important milestone cracked: With 30%, our AfD is now already 10 percentage points ahead of the Union! The citizens want the political change - and they will get it. Time for the AfD!" wrote AfD co-leader Alice Weidel on X.

A new YouGov poll released today has the AfD at 29 percent but the CDU is even lower, at 18 percent, an absolutely abysmal result for the paryt.

The numbers arrive days after the CDU's heavy defeat in Saxony-Anhalt, where the AfD won 43.8 percent. Merz himself described the result as a shock for his party. "We are all deeply shocked; we did not expect such a result," he said.

Personal ratings for the chancellor are equally grim. In a recent Insa survey, 78 percent of respondents answered "no" when asked, "Is Friedrich Merz (still) the right chancellor?" Only 14 percent said yes; 8 percent offered no opinion. Even among CDU voters, the picture is bleak for Merz: 58 percent opposed him and just 36 percent supported him.

Pressure inside the CDU is growing. Speculation about a possible change at the top has circulated for weeks, with North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and Bavaria's Markus Söder frequently named as potential successors. Söder, for his part, said the long-standing "firewall" against the AfD is not working.

"This 'firewall model' has failed," he said.

Instead, he offered a different image:

"We in Bavaria see ourselves as a protective wall."

He argued that simply isolating the AfD without confronting its arguments no longer works. Instead, he wants to confront the AfD on issues such as immigration. It remains to be seen how that is possible if the CDU keeps allying with left-wing parties.

However, it is important to note that Söder continues to rule out a cooperation or coalition with the AfD.

"Not talking about the content at all, putting them in a corner and cobbling together some majorities around them without addressing the issues. That is the wrong path," he said.

AfD co-leader Alice Weidel, speaking after the Saxony-Anhalt vote, engaged in an intense debate with Merz in the Bundestag, saying, "The voters in Saxony-Anhalt have told you in the language of the democratic sovereign with all clarity: black-red is over."

Merz has countered by calling the AfD a "destructive force" that "wants to destabilize our country."

State elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin on Sept. 20 will put Merz's CDU further to the test. Speculation is growing that if the CDU falters during those elections, enormous pressure will be placed on Merz and his role as chancellor could become untenable.

Bank Of England To Stop Selling 20- And 30-Year Gilts As Yields Soar

The Bank of England is set to announce this week that it will stop selling long-dated government bonds which ‌have been hit by a global selloff in debt markets, potentially freeing up some cash for finance minister John Healey, the Telegraph reported adding that the BoE would say it would stop selling 20- and 30-year gilts.

The central bank, which already scaled back the sale of longer-dated gilts, is due to announce its plan for the pace of quantitative tightening on Thursday, alongside its latest interest rate decision.

Prices of 20- and 30-year gilts touched their lowest since 1998 (and yields inversely hit the highest) on Monday as part of a rout of government bonds around the world as the Iran war adds to inflation pressures and puts pressure on central banks to raise official borrowing costs.

Last year the BoE skewed sales away from long-dated gilts, and Deutsche Bank has said they could be halted altogether. A BoE survey published in July showed investors expected just over 15% of the central bank's bond sales in the 12 months from September to be of longer maturity.

The Telegraph said halting longer-dated bond sales could save the government £2.5 billion a year by the end of the decade which ‌would be a boost for Healey as he prepares for the first budget statement of the government of Prime Minister Andy Burnham on October 28.

The BoE racked up £875 billion of government bond purchases between 2009 and 2021 as part of its emergency QE support for the economy. Since it stopped reinvesting maturing gilt proceeds in February 2022, the BoE's bond holdings have fallen by over £400 billion, a third of it through active sales - unlike the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank which allow the bonds they hold to mature but do not sell them.

Some investors have called on the BoE to halt sales but Governor Andrew Bailey has defended the program, saying it would allow for intervention in markets if needed in the future.

The Reform UK party of former Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage has criticised the cost of the BoE's QT programme. The BoE survey in July showed investors expected the central bank to slow the pace at which it reduces its bond portfolio to £50 billion in the 12 months to the end of September 2027 from £70 billion in the current 12-month period.

VDL: EU to back Ukraine more strongly than ever

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen insisted in her State of the Union address on Wednesday that the European Union will "support Ukraine more strongly than ever through the hardest winter of the war."

In her speech, von der Leyen promised that the EU will provide Ukraine with humanitarian, energy, and defense aid. She reiterated Kyiv and the bloc's joint projects on developing drones and other defense systems. The president also hailed the initiative to purchase United States-made Patriot missiles in the name of the conflict-hit country.

Furthermore, von der Leyen stressed that Ukraine will be able to resist "North Korean missiles and Russian drones." She also urged additional sanctions against the Eurasian country and harsher enforcement of the existing ones. "The pressure on Russia must keep increasing," she underscored.

VDL: Trade deficit with China at tipping point

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Wednesday that the European Union's trade deficit with China has "reached a tipping point."

In her annual state of the union address, Von der Leyen warned that the current state of trade with China is "unsustainable" and noted the bloc is in discussions to "rebalance" trade. She pointed out that an agreement on the matter would be in the interest of both sides, as China is facing weaker domestic demand and needs the European market.

The Commission president insisted Europe plans to use all tools at its disposal to rebalance the economic relations with China, saying that "words are good, but deeds are better." She also warned that Europe is still "too dependent" on China when it comes to critical raw materials and needs to diversify.

VDL: We must urgently reimagine our partnerships

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the European Union must "urgently reimagine" its partnerships, announcing it will raise relations with Canada to their "highest level possible," offering it the position of the first associate member of the EU. She stressed that "power does not belong to the strongest, the richest, or the loudest," seemingly referring to the Trump administration, as she said the EU and Canada will cooperate on technology, defense, energy, critical minerals and economic security.

Von der Leyen said she will propose a new European security strategy as the EU faces hybrid attacks from Russia, and set out ideas to make a European Security Council a reality. She announced a European Instrument for Strategic Enablers in line with NATO, explaining that strategic enablers are "the critical support assets and force multipliers that any credible defence relies on."
