A new Google feature allowing users to alter Google Earth imagery could further complicate efforts to verify claims about military gains in the US-Iran war, CBS News reported Friday.
According to the report, Google’s Nano Banana 2 image editor produced realistic but false satellite images showing damaged US aircraft and burn marks at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base, which has faced repeated Iranian attacks.
Google said generated images include its SynthID digital watermark and can be checked through Gemini or Google Lens. CBS found Lens detected manipulation in the original image but failed after it was cropped, instead wrongly identifying the scene as an airfield in Shiraz.
Iran has repeatedly released unsourced satellite images claiming to show damage to US bases and equipment, including images it said depicted destroyed F-35 fighter jets at the Jordanian base.
