Spain says 48,300 migrants returned to Morocco

The Spanish government said on Friday that 48,300 migrants returned from the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, located on the North African coast, to Morocco by 6 pm local time.

According to data from Spanish authorities, a total of 50,000 people illegally crossed from Morocco to Ceuta, and at least 57 people died trying to reach the Spanish border.

Earlier in the day, Italy decided to suspend the Schengen agreement with Spain, closing sea and air borders, citing national security reasons.
