Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday that her country is prepared to suspend the Schengen area with Spain due to the high number of migrants coming into the country through the Spanish city of Ceuta, located on the North African coast and bordered by Morocco.
"The images coming from Ceuta are striking and demonstrate, once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a concrete threat to the security of Europe's borders," Meloni said in a post on X. "Italy will not stand by and watch. We are convening the relevant bodies, and following these meetings, we are prepared to intervene with extraordinary measures to defend the borders and the safety of citizens, including the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain," she added.
The Italian prime minister's comments follow videos that spread across social media today, showing hundreds of people crossing into Ceuta either on foot or by sea.
