Finland proposes to extend border closure with Russia

 The Finnish Ministry of Interior revealed in a statement on Thursday that the country's government proposed to extend the temporary border closure with Russia until December 31, 2028.

"The purpose of the Act is to combat any attempts to put pressure on Finland, strengthen border security and prepare for the most serious incidents of instrumentalised migration," the ministry explained, insisting that the threat at Finland's eastern border "remained high" and further mentioning that, so far, the measure has proved useful in combating the issue.

The measure is currently expected to expire on the last day of 2026. Finland closed its land border with Russia at the end of 2023.
