United States President Donald Trump is said to be considering easing sanctions on Iran and releasing frozen Iranian assets in exchange for progress on the nuclear issue, sources told Axios reporter Barak Ravid on Monday.
The development follows Iran's proposed seven-day roadmap to end the war with the United States, under which it would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, secure an easing of sanctions on its oil exports, and gain access to an estimated $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. However, President Trump publicly rejected the offer.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz explained that Trump declined the plan as Tehran demanded sanctions relief and access to frozen assets before nuclear negotiations. "They were asking for everything up front, with a promise that they would then talk," Waltz added.
