US President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he approved new fuel economy standards, rolling back Biden-era rules meant to improve vehicle efficiency and accelerate electric vehicle adoption.
"These new Standards will take the waste out of building cars in America. That means LOWER PRICES, saving families thousands on a new, beautiful, and safe car — Far better than the Environmental Monsters that we were building heretofore," the president claimed on Truth Social.
The administration was expected to reduce the average fuel-economy requirement for 2031 to about 34.5 miles per gallon, down from the 50.4 mpg target under former President Joe Biden. Trump said more than $100 billion was being invested in the US auto industry, citing planned investment by companies including General Motors, Ford and Stellantis.
