Billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview with NBC News set to be aired in full on Sunday that artificial intelligence (AI) is "powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths" and insisted the technology needs to be government-regulated.
"No one thinks self-regulation is enough," Gates told NBC News' 'Meet the Press.' "You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like ... And that has to be a required thing. And it will be a little bit of overhead for the industry, but not a dramatic slowing of what they're doing," he added.
The comments come after several AI executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, called for a slowdown in the development of the technology, warning of safety risks. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump dismissed their concerns, insisting that claims that AI could take over the world are a "hoax."
