US said to press China over alleged nuclear tests

 The Trump administration is said to have raised the issue of China's alleged secret low-level nuclear tests during their off-the-record meetings, an insider told The Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

Namely, the US officials pressed Beijing over the potential expansion of its nuclear arsenal amid concerns that China may have violated the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty by holding the reported nuclear tests in secret. Although the treaty has not entered into force, China, Russia and the United States have pledged to abide by its provisions.

Back in 2020, Washington alleged that China conducted a nuclear test at its Lop Nur site in the northwest part of the country, though Beijing denied the accusation. US President Donald Trump instructed the Department of War to resume nuclear weapons testing "on an equal basis" with other countries in 2025.
