US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent questioned Wednesday how Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly would return home as US sanctions disrupted the country’s international flights.
“I’m not sure how the Iranian representatives at the UN are going to get home,” Bessent told Fox News’ America Reports.
He said Washington’s “Operation Economic Outcast” was putting unprecedented pressure on Iran and estimated that more than 80% to 90% of its international flights had been shut down.
Bessent warned Monday that Iranian airlines could be forced to halt international operations from Wednesday as foreign companies providing aviation services faced the threat of secondary US sanctions.
Flights by Iranian airlines to Azerbaijan were suspended from Tuesday because of the sanctions, Azerbaijan’s State Civil Aviation Agency said. Turkish Airlines said Monday it had halted all flights to Iran until at least March 2027.
Some Iranian carriers continued international operations Wednesday despite the US deadline. Bloomberg reported that flight-tracking data showed at least six departures from Iran to destinations including Bangkok, Phuket, Shanghai and Kabul after the restrictions took effect.
